  Equipment Rack
Featuring the Equipment Rack
Choosing an Equipment Rack

An equipment rack consists of two vertical rails that can be fixed to a floor or wall. Racks provide an inexpensive solution for mounting multiple pieces of equipment.
When choosing a rack you need to determine what size rack you need. In order to determine what size rack you will need, it is first necessary to determine what equipment will be mounted on the rack. Consider the size and weight of all the equipment as well. It is important that the rack you choose be capable of supporting your equipment
  Measurments - Width:
The first measurement you need to know is the width between the two rails. This measurement is shown in inches and is measured from one mounting hole to the corresponding hole on the other rail. The most common rack width in use is 19 inches.
  Measurments - Height:
The second measurement is the usable height of the rack. Shown as Rack Spaces (RS) or Rack Units (RU), this measurement shows the amount of vertical space on the rails. A single rack space or unit is 1.75” high. You determine the height of the rack you require by adding up the total rack spaces of your equipment. For example, a 44 rack spaces would give you 77” of usable height and hold 22 2 rack space panels.
Since rack widths are standard, the amount of vertical space will determine how much equipment your rack will hold. Also, keep in mind that because this measurement is usable space, the overall (or total) height of the rack will be greater.
  Cable Management:
Another important factor to consider is cable management. Be sure to incorporate options into your design. A neat, clean equipment installation can quickly become a rat’s nest of cables once you start connecting everything. (See TekTalk Cable Labeling)
